What the roof was like
A skylight in a pitched shingle roof with a brown ceiling stain below it. Two earlier visits had caulked around the frame.
What made it hard
The leak only showed in wind-driven rain, which made it hard to reproduce. The water was running behind the upper flashing and entering at the lower corners of the curb.
What we installed, and why
We lifted the surrounding shingles, rebuilt the curb with self-adhered membrane, fitted new step and head flashing and shingled back in. We tested the repair with a hose from the high side before closing up.
The result
The ceiling has stayed dry through two winters of wind-driven rain. The owners repainted the ceiling after the repair.
