What the roof was like

An eighteen year old shingle roof with curling edges and granule loss on the south slope. The attic held moisture in winter.

What made it hard

The attic had soffit vents blocked by insulation and no real ridge vent, so warm damp air had nowhere to go and was ageing the shingles from underneath.

What we installed, and why

We cleared the soffit vents, cut a continuous ridge vent, replaced soft deck boards, laid new underlayment and installed architectural shingles with a ventilated ridge cap.

The result

The attic now dries out in winter and the new shingles should last longer for it. The owners noticed less condensation on the attic hatch the first winter.
