What the roof was like
The original cedar shakes were worn thin, heavily mossed and lifting at the edges. The owners wanted to keep the character of the house and had been quoted for asphalt by two other companies.
What made it hard
Shaded by tall trees, the roof never fully dried, so the deck boards under the north slope were damp. The owners also asked about maintenance and about the fire rating of cedar in their area.
What we installed, and why
We removed the old cedar, replaced the damp deck boards, installed a ventilated cedar underlayment and laid new shakes with proper exposure. We gave the owners a written maintenance plan and explained the fire rating options before they chose.
The result
The house kept its original look and the roof now sheds water properly. The maintenance plan is a one page checklist the owners keep in the garage.
“We were not sure cedar was worth keeping. They walked us through the upkeep and the options before they quoted, and the new roof looks right on the house.”
